Who we are

For over a century, the Houston family have proudly owned and operated Burrowye Station. It was originally purchased by James ‘Jimmy’ Houston in 1919 to serve as safe summer pasture for the family's grazing interests at Hay.

Whilst the original jersey have given way to Angus, the family’s core business has stayed the same; Providing robust, healthy cattle with the focus on eating quality. After four generations of Houston management, the property now runs under the banner of the Houston Pastoral Company.

Our Cattle are breed using genetics and genomic sequencing to help ensure our herd has the desired temperament, structure, growth, carcass traits and maternal function we desire to maintain our premium status.  We also still run a few composite ewes for the wool and meat market.

Over the past decade or we have also been focused on the integration of agriculture, biodiversity and sustainable farming practices. We have managed to purchase some adjoining pine country which had been degraded through years of logging and redeveloped it into prime agricultural land. Using paddock rehabilitation and integrating wildlife corridors throughout these pastures, we are also able to provide a home for the indigenous flora and fauna to the Burrowye are. We have positioned the corridors so they link up to the surrounding National Parks and State Forests.
